Can You Really Build a Website for Free With Wix

Posted on October 13th, 2017

Today, every business needs an online presence in order to have any chance of success, right? You would certainly think so, particularly given that we automatically turn to our laptop or smartphone whenever we need to find some kind of product or service.

It might come as a surprise, then, to learn that research carried out on behalf of GoDaddy found that more than half of small businesses do not have a website. Even more intriguing are the reasons cited. 20 percent of those without a website said that they could not afford one.

Today, the world and his wife seems to have a blog or website, so it seems crazy that any small business can hope to compete without an online presence. There are numerous website builders out there and plenty of open source software that does not cost a penny.

Wix is one of the best known, and also claims to be completely free. WordPress is another – it powers more than a quarter of all the websites in existence and is open source. Let’s take a look at these, to see if you really can create a business website for little or no cost.

Is Wix free?

The Wix website builder is one of the best known, and is used by more than 65 million people. It is ideal for beginners, and you can take a closer look at its features in this Wix review. The biggest question that people ask, however, is if you can really get a website builder, complete with domain name for free?

The answer is that yes, you can, although the free plan means you will not be able to choose your domain name and your site will display ads for Wix. This is fair enough, they have a business to run too. Realistically, you will want a custom domain name that is relevant to your business, so it is worth paying for the premium upgrade – it is still inexpensive.

As far as functionality is concerned, the Wix software could not be easier to use. It is simply a case of choosing the template you like and dragging and dropping the content or images. Even the biggest technophobe could have a serviceable site up and running in 30 minutes.

Is WordPress king of the internet?

Some people will tell you that practically every website is powered by WordPress, so you need look no further. Certainly, open source software like this has many advantages. It is free to download, and with millions of users, there is no shortage of community support.

However, we are not quite in Utopia yet, and the old saying of “you get what you pay for” has some bearing here. WordPress is nowhere near as slick or intuitive to use as Wix, and realistically, you need a little knowledge and experience to get the best out of it.

Bear in mind, also, that you will need to arrange and pay for your domain name registration and hosting separately.

For ultimate flexibility, WordPress is hard to fault, as long as you have the skills to use it. For ease of use, however, the Wix builder is the hands-down winner.
